"Depth of field has always been one of the most difficult things for photographers to understand. When we talk about depth of field we are talking about the area within an image from the front to the back that is in focus. Therefore a large depth of field means that a large area of the picture is in focus, and a small depth of field means that a small area of the picture is in focus. To determine the depth of field of an image we have to look at the focal length of the lens being used, the distance between the photographer the subject and the background and eighth most importantly the aperture of the lens."

I have just been looking at a few other blogs and web sites and a lot of the information out there about photography is pretty confusing. There are lots of terms to understand and different techniques to master, at least thats how it feels when you first start out.

I remember when I first got interested in digital photography. Every time I picked up a manual, it felt like I was running into a brick wall.

Digital Photography: SILHOUETTES: "Almost all subjects work as silhouettes, just remember that your subject is going to lose its detail.

This means that your subject needs to be recognisable when it is reduced to dark against light. [...] Keep to simple shapes and avoid overlapping shapes. Bold graphic shapes work best. One of the best tips that I can give is to look at your subject and pull a funny face - half close your eyes, and squint. This will eliminate the detail, increase the contrast and so give an idea of what your silhouette will look like."

Now [just about] every digital camera comes with a lens with both optical zoom and digital zoom capabilities. What is the difference and should I use one as opposed to the other?

Simply, optical zoom uses the optics of the lens to bring the subject closer. Digital zoom uses internal software to digitally enlarge a chosen portion of the image. In other words it simulates the action of the zoom lens.

Which is better? Optical or digital."

I decided to invest in a telefoto lens and a diffuser flash for my digital SLR, thus spending about $700, all in the name of good photography. I figured that the hobby was one that was going to stay, and that it was time. The add-ons are great! Love how versatile my camera's become with them."

This highlights that digital photography is something that everyone can enjoy. Getting started in the hobby can seem daunting, but many people seem to 'fall' into photography as a hobby by just playing around. Once you have some knowledge, the flexibility and variation within the subject is wide enough so that there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Nature is all around us, and its beauties are unlimited. In this fast-paced world of mocha-lattes and traffic jams at rush hour, too many of us take the beauty of nature for granted. Luckily, there are still people in the world who see this beauty and choose to share it with those of us that are too busy to normally take notice. Poets and photographers are great at this. They take what seems like the ordinary and present it to us in a way that shows us the elegance, the magnificence and the amazing that is on this rock we call Earth.

What is Nature Photography?

So what do we mean when we say nature photography? Well, it may seem obvious but let's go ahead and explain. Nature is our natural environment. It is those things that exist in our world without human intervention; such as trees, grass, flowers, a forest, a river, and animals in their natural environment.

Nature photography is the photography of these things. There is a wide spectrum that is included in nature photography. Pictures of sunsets, sunrises and ocean waves lapping at the shore are all nature photography. So are the trees in the forest and beautiful flowers growing in an open field.

But nature photography can go even deeper than that, showing us parts of the world that we may not be able to see otherwise. If you live in the south, you may not see snow-capped mountains if it wasn't for nature photography. You may not be able to see a deep canyon, a volcano, or a beautiful beach if it were not for photographs of these places.

The photographers that bring us pictures of these places give us an image of something we may never see. It's truly an amazing gift to give. "

Landscape photography is a great field of photography, especially if you love nature and if you love to travel. You can travel the world taking pictures of beautiful scenes across many countries. Of course, this is landscape photography on a big scale. Not many people are lucky enough to start off traveling the world.

But you can find beautiful landscapes right where you live. That's the great thing about nature, it's everywhere, and landscapes are everywhere. And that same sunset behind the mountain that you've seen everyday since you were a kid may look pretty amazing to someone who has never been to the mountains. Seeing the sun rise up out of the oceanfront may be absolutely astonishing to someone who has never been to the beach. It's all relative."
